As my little boy is getting older, he is also becoming more curious while being on a constant discovery tour. At 14 months, he is in the full stage of exploring every texture, form, shape as well a every cause and effect (and yes, there have been head bumps and fingers stuck in doors). But I knew I needed to diversify his playtime with not only toys and books, but things that he can touch, squeeze, mould and throw – to see that effect.
So I set out to make some play dough for him. As it was always daddy’s favourite thing to play with as a child, I knew I would please both of my boys at home. I didn’t want to just buy Play-Do at a toy store, knowing it still contains toxic ingredients and well aware that it will land in my little ones mouth at one point. So, I researched and was overwhelmed with the number of natural recipes. I chose one that sounded promising and easy to make and gave it a go.
Here is the recipe:
1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup salt
1 tablespoon cream of tartare
1/2 tablespoon vegetable oil
1/4 cup water
To give it all some colour, you can use natural food colouring, or look for whatever you have in your house. I added some Matcha powder to create a nice pastel green dough and also some purple sweet potato powder for a nice pastel purple!
Being an Essential Oils lover, I of course had to try and infuse some there as well, to give an added purpose to the play. These were my favourite ones.
Frankincense for Focus
Peppermint for Energy
Lemon for Clarity
Citrus Fresh for Creativity
Lavender for Comfort
You can try to match the scents to the colours as well 🙂
Have fun making this for your little one, or with your little one – knowing that you have created something safe and completely toxic free!
